Keep your Employees Cyber Safe this Summer

With the summer vacation season getting into full swing, your employees will be using their mobile devices for accessing travel and social media apps, staying connected using public WiFis, and powering up via charging ports while on the go. But it’s important to be hyper-aware that cybercriminals are on the prowl for your employees’ personal and financial information, as well as looking for ways to compromise your organization’s data. During this time, mobile security risks are turned up to 11!

To that end, we’re excited to announce a social media campaign on mobile security awareness for the month of July. As the distinction between Bring-Your-Own Device (BYOD) and corporate-managed devices continues to blur, its crucial employers and employees stay vigilant about the potential risks while traveling. We hope this campaign helps you elevate best practices your employees can take to stay cyber safe.

Urge your employees to follow these four tips to ensure they and your organization aren’t at risk from cybercriminals.

Don’t Take the Bait: Perhaps the most common type of social engineering attack, phishing is used to steal user data like login credentials and credit card numbers. Malicious actors masquerade as a trusted entity and dupe people into opening an email, instant message, or text message. Triple-check the authenticity of every link and email.

Don’t Get Juice-Jacked: Avoid public charging stations: plug chargers into a wall socket, or take a portable charger to recharge mobile devices. Malicious actors can secretly modify USB ports to install malware on phones or steal data.

Don’t Fall Prey to Risky Apps: Think twice before installing a number of popular travel apps as they can put both privacy and security at risk. Download apps from official app stores, avoid apps from unauthorized sources, and research apps and check reviews before downloading them.

Don’t Fall for a Man-in-the-Middle: This eavesdropping attack is where attackers interrupt an existing conversation or data transfer. After inserting themselves in the “middle” of the transfer, the attackers pretend to be both legitimate participants. Be aware of digital surroundings to keep device and information safe. Steer clear of websites that look sloppy, and avoid streaming or downloading content from unofficial sites. Malware is often hidden in links on dubious sites.

By encouraging employees to follow these tips, your organization will have peace of mind this summer while proactively lessening the risk from cybercriminals.
