Heinen noted increasing support among other EU member states for a digital euro agreement. European ministers are set to discuss the matter at the Ecofin Council in two weeks.
The Ecofin Council, comprising economic and finance ministers from EU member states, oversees economic policy, taxation, and financial services regulations. The digital euro is a recurring topic in their discussions.
Two years ago, the European Commission proposed introducing a digital euro. Once a formal proposal is made, both the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union will establish their positions and begin negotiations.
Although EU member states haven’t yet formalized a collective stance, Denmark, as the current EU President, aims to achieve a Council position by the end of this calendar year.
The Dutch cabinet supports this ambition, provided sufficient progress is made on outstanding issues. These include the digital euro’s cost model and its distribution obligations.
Minister Heinen indicated that while there’s growing consensus to finalize negotiations, several member states, including the Netherlands, can only make a definitive decision on a Council position once discussions on these remaining topics are concluded. The Ecofin Council meeting is scheduled for December 12. More details on the annotated agenda can be found here: Rijksoverheid.nl.
