Leroy Merlin is an international home improvement and gardening retailer, founded in 1960. Headquartered in France, it has 2,200 stores around the world and serves 36 million customers annually.

Security has always been a top priority for Leroy Merlin. Its customer data is its lifeblood, and it recognizes it must be protected accordingly.
Under the company’s corporate cybersecurity strategy, operational responsibility is devolved to subsidiaries. As part of its local cybersecurity strategy, Leroy Merlin Italia (LMIT) approached QuoIntelligence to ensure the highest level of security protection for its Italian network infrastructure.

The Requirement

Alessio Setaro, Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) at LMIT explains: “What drove us to search for a specialist provider of cyber threat intelligence services was the need to ensure business security and continuity through:
- Anticipating and preventing attacks
- Reducing the risk of data and system breaches
- Developing the ability to respond quickly to emerging threats
“These drill down into specific and measurable objectives:
- Prevent attacks by gaining intelligence on emerging threats and how cybercriminals operate
- Reduce the risk of data breaches by proactively identifying compromised user and customer accounts in the Dark Web
- Respond rapidly to emerging threats and vulnerabilities and anticipating risk mitigation and vulnerability management action
- Protect corporate reputation by reducing the risk of data breach and countering the illegal use of the LMIT brand
- Maximize investment through intelligence activities in marketplaces to identify items for sale linked to thefts from LMIT stores
“This project is the core of our cybersecurity strategy. It is an intermediate layer that connects our strategy and tactics. It directs the former and determines concrete actions for the latter,” says Alessio.
Finally, two significant internal challenges were to explain and prove the effectiveness of QuoIntelligence’s service to justify the investment to stakeholders, and answer how the service actually protects the brand from fraud.

Laying the Groundwork

Alessio continues: “Leroy Merlin Italia has a clear, simple goal: To elevate its cybersecurity and data protection to the highest possible level.
“After evaluating multiple alternatives and competitors, QuoIntelligence was recommended to me by a colleague. After contacting QuoIntelligence we saw very quickly that they are the best fit to our requirements.
“From the beginning, we saw we could build a service tailored to our needs, and a flexibility we rarely see from suppliers these days. Last but not least, we were extremely impressed with the professionalism and competence of the CEO and the staff dedicated to LMIT.
“The ease of working with their team meant they quickly understood our specific needs. From this they developed a solution that fits our requirements like a glove.“

Implementation — Smooth, Simple, and Fast
Clear expectations were established from the outset. This was a key reason the implementation went smoothly. LMIT’s technical team was able to quickly implement the necessary tools. Our team dedicated to LMIT began with a series of assessments. The results of theses were extremely positive.
Our team found the technical and business aspects of LMIT’s network infrastructure met all global security standards. And our comprehensive evaluation found several areas for improvement which we then worked on together to further strengthen LMIT’s overall cyber protection strategy.
As part of this process, we supplied detailed reports on vulnerabilities found as well as making recommendations for remediation activities and best practices. This resulted in improved levels of security across their entire system.
According to Alessio: “The implementation was very fast. After about three months of Proof of Value we decided to adopt the service and develop it to the needs we had set. The commercial negotiation was very fast too.”

- Faster response:
Reduction of the time to manage vulnerabilities and take the countermeasures necessary to mitigate emerging risks and threats - Better service to the SOC:
Continuous flow of Tactical Intelligence (eg Indicators of Comprise) to the SOC - Higher awareness:
Especially of the ongoing geopolitical crisis - Improved support to Leroy Merlin’s Legal Team:
Through analysis provided in reports on ongoing fraud and brand abuse campaigns - Fraud reduction:
Taking down of online brand abuse and customer fraud campaigns - Improved customer data protection:
Protection of customer accounts through active monitoring of the Dark Web

Looking ahead

LMIT is looking to extend the service to other Italian business units and integrate QuoIntelligence’s Tactical Intelligence for the benefit of the SOC. LMIT is also evaluating integration with other cybersecurity products used by the group. Finally, they will perfect the service to combat fraud toward customers.
QuoIntelligence is supplying ongoing support to ensure LMIT remains secure against new threats and malicious actors online. In addition to regular assessments and updates on best practices & industry trends, we are always available to provide assistance with additional cybersecurity-related matters — such as incident response plans or compliance audits.

Conclusion

The combination of LMIT’s retail operations ability combined with QuoIntelligence’s cyber threat intelligence knowledge and experience make for perfect partners.
Alessio concludes: “I highly recommend QuoIntelligence to CISOs and system integrators on three key points:
- Competence
- Responsiveness
- Flexibility
“The strong point for me is the highly specialized service provided.
By concentrating on cyber threat intelligence, QuoIntelligence makes the difference compared to the competition.”
Overall, the project has helped — and continues to help — LMIT achieve better security outcomes at every stage of its digital transformation journey. This is essential since LMIT, as one of Europe’s leading home improvement stores, must remain on top when it comes to protecting customer data.
All this adds up to the perfect answer to the question posed earlier — having a top class dedicated cyber threat intelligence partner maximizes your cyber protection and makes you more cyber resilient.
